I've had quite a few students who have told me about their old teachers who have told them NOT to sing. I have also had students with ostensibly bad ears who thought they would never be able to sing - or distraught people who were told by others they cannot sing.
My advice: BALONEY! The key to becoming a good singer is pure hard work - but SMART hard work - once you know the correct technique. Work trumps talent every single time, as anybody from Abraham Maslow to Thomas Edison to Abraham Lincoln would've told you.
